Repertory Etude Teaching
Learn historical and contemporary works of the American tradition through American Dance Legacy Initiative's Repertory Etudes—short dances based on signature works of American choreographers. Dancing Legacy's teaching methods build literacy, investigate authenticity, and nurture an individual relationship to the dances. RepEtude Teaching emphasizes different elements depending on skill-level, need, and interest and can take the form of a stand-alone workshop or multi-day residency geared towards performance. Video viewing, reading, discussion, and writing offer further insight and context around the featured choreographer and related dance styles.
RepEtudes we currently offer for teaching residencies feature choreography by Robert Battle, Danny Buraczeski, Danny Grossman, Carla Maxwell after José Limón, Donald McKayle, and David Parsons. Dancing Legacy's residencies bring together dancers, students, educators, and general audiences in a comfortable environment that supports active engagement with dance through multiple points of entry. Residencies center around RepEtude teaching (described above) and may include one or more of the following additional elements:
Repertory Etude Campaign Partnerships
Join American Dance Legacy Initiative's Repertory Etude Campaign. Contribute to the development and dissemination of the Repertory Etudes, providing access to American dance heritage for all types of dancers and a broad public. Partnership opportunities include producing programming with RepEtudes, contributing to the creation of contextual materials, and video documentation and editing.
